Franklin Middle School opened its doors on August 27, 1984, to serve the rapidly growing western area of Fairfax County. Middle school instructional teams include teachers, counselors, and administrators who serve groups of approximately 140 students. Franklin has been designated as a Governor’s School of Educational Excellence since 2007 when from the original awards inception. Crossfield Elementary School, opened in 1988, is named after an aeronautical pioneer whose accomplishments include being the first aviator to fly twice the speed of sound and the first test pilot to fly the X-15. A. Scott Crossfield was a neighbor and friend of the school and served as a role model for intellectual curiosity, educational preparation, and high standards of excellence. Crossfield is a home for the active mind. The school has a strong instructional program in which student engagement with learning is important.
