Navy Elementary

Navy Elementary School is an exciting place for children to learn and grow. The exceptional, warm, caring staff is committed to implementing educational opportunities for children that blend technology with research-based strategies for academic, social, and emotional growth. In addition to a strong academic focus at Navy, physical fitness and an enriching fine arts program play important roles in developing the whole child. The school focus is on learning. Staff members are committed to providing students with a supportive, differentiated, technology rich, instructional environment in which children can thrive using 21st century skills, as well as setting goals. Navy School’s very active PTO and business partner, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, support our efforts through classroom volunteerism, in-school cultural arts assemblies and health and community related projects. Typical after school programs include: Chess Club, Athletic Enrichment, Basketball Club, Dolphin Discovery science classes, Dynamic Dolphin Intervention Club, Junior Master Gardeners, and Imagination Stage classes. FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) Spanish class is taught in grades K-6 during the school day. The Navy Family has a strong commitment to community service. Students in all grades participate in a variety of activities involving recycling and preserving our Earth. Student awareness in researching and recycling reusable, everyday items and applying this research to make the environment a cleaner, healthier place, is highlighted in every classroom. Navy students are well prepared to become productive, contributing members of society.
Crossfield Elementary

Crossfield Elementary School, opened in 1988, is named after an aeronautical pioneer whose accomplishments include being the first aviator to fly twice the speed of sound and the first test pilot to fly the X-15. A. Scott Crossfield was a neighbor and friend of the school and served as a role model for intellectual curiosity, educational preparation, and high standards of excellence. Crossfield is a home for the active mind. The school has a strong instructional program in which student engagement with learning is important. Students at all levels are encouraged to develop an understanding of both the content and the process of learning. A well-equipped library-media center is literally and figuratively at the center of the school. Parents are active and involved in student life at Crossfield. Volunteers are very much in evidence every day. In addition to providing extra hands, the PTO supports a wide variety of initiatives, including funding for student enrichment, staff development, and an outdoor classroom. Staff members use differentiated instruction to meet the needs of students with varied learning styles and abilities. Crossfield continues to support inclusive special education programs to meet the needs of students with disabilities. An energetic staff, focused students, and a supportive community work together to prepare students for lifelong learning.
Franklin Middle School

Franklin Middle School opened its doors on August 27, 1984, to serve the rapidly growing western area of Fairfax County. Middle school instructional teams include teachers, counselors, and administrators who serve groups of approximately 140 students. The team structure provides each student an identity group within the larger school population and facilitates strong academic, social, and emotional support for every individual. Franklin has been designated as a Governor’s School of Educational Excellence since 2007 when from the original awards inception. The award is the highest honor under the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program created by the Board of Education to advance Virginia’s “competence to excellence” agenda to encourage advanced learning and achievement in the Commonwealth’s public schools. Franklin has a large honors program of studies. Instructional programs include a challenging math curriculum; 8th grade students participate in Finance Park. English and social studies instruction capitalizes on interdisciplinary opportunities and emphasizes reading, writing, and technology-enhanced multimedia presentations that are viable in real-world work settings. Science instruction for grade 7 environmental studies and an investigation-based exploration of the properties of the physical world at grade 8. At both grades, students use hand-held data collection technologies. Our on-site wetlands provide a living laboratory experience and support of the middle school exploratory curriculum. Included with our rich academic program, Franklin students complete an elective choice of an introduction to visual arts, speech and drama, world languages and cultures, synergistic technology, and reading and mathematics focused support classes, including Read 180 and Language!. We are a Blue Ribbon School for our Music programs. Highly motivated students and faculty members regularly receive awards for exceptional academic and artistic accomplishments. We have a very active after-school program which offers academic and recreational opportunities for all students. Our school’s motto is “Franklin – Where Ideas are Invented.” Students, faculty, and families share in this tradition of academic, enrichment, citizenship, and responsibility to community. The school celebrates its strong parent and community support led by the PTA.
Rachel Carson Middle School

Rachel Carson Middle School is named after a prominent author and environmentalist who embraced the sense of wonder. She is quoted as saying, “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.” Carson Middle School embraces the sense of wonder and encourages student discovery in all aspects of their learning and their lives. Rachel Carson staff takes pride in its service to children, parents, and the community. Our Student Services department and school counselors work to support the social and emotional needs of all students. Through curricular and extracurricular opportunities, students have opportunities to understand and practice the merits of care for the environment. Since its opening in 1989, Rachel Carson Middle School has been recognized by numerous organizations, including The Virginia Middle School Association and the Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform as a “School to Watch.” RCMS was re-designated as a School To Watch for the fourth time in June 2017. In addition, Rachel Carson has also received the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence and Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award for continued academic achievement. In June 2017, for its work with promoting environmental stewardship, RCMS earned the Green Flag Eco School designation from the National Wildlife Federation. Rachel Carson has a multitude of programs that cater to a wide range of student needs. The school provides general education, advanced academic placement, and honors programs in the four core subject areas. Math offerings include Math 7, Math 7 Honors, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, and Algebra II. Also offered are a wide variety of world languages for high school credit. Our school’s special education program includes a full continuum of services to meet the needs of all students. Our ESOL program supports beginning and developing language learners. Throughout the past and present, the school’s Vision in Progress articulates the innovative learning environment that the school strives to achieve. This vision focuses on students using 21st century skills (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication) while engaging in authentic learning experiences. Furthermore, this vision emphasizes students interacting in a safe and respectful community. Strategies and activities such as interdisciplinary teams, project-based learning, individual goal setting, and a blended approach to use of instructional technology help to bring this vision to life. The school offers a robust after school program. Students take part in academic supports, STEAM-related offerings, athletics, and clubs that cater to student-specific interests.
Chantilly High School

Oakton High School, located in Vienna near Interstate 66, serves an area of Fairfax County that extends from the City of Fairfax to the Town of Herndon. As expressed in the school’s Vision Statement, Oakton High School desires to “prepare all students for productive and ethical living, life-long learning, and innovative and responsible leadership.” These domains-living, learning, and leading-summarize Oakton’s mission to educate well-rounded students who are prepared to contribute to their local and global communities. Oakton is a comprehensive high school and an interdisciplinary community of learners that prioritizes reflective and authentic 21st century learning experiences. Since 2011, Oakton students have engaged in a unified portfolio learning program that cultivates critical thinking, communication, creativity, collaboration, and citizenship. Starting with freshman year and culminating with the senior Capstone project, Oakton students set learning goals and reflect on their acquisition of real-world, interdisciplinary skills. In the spring, students present their work to the community at an Exhibition of Learning and to the faculty through a final Presentation of Learning. Oakton features a wide variety of AP courses, the AVID program, and many elective classes including psychology, fine arts, engineering, accounting, and several world languages.
